All My Children 1974, 1975

Jeff's attorney, Paul Martin, began looking into Jason Maxwell's affairs and one name kept popping up,Margo Flax. Margo was at loose ends, her modeling career was long over and her lover Jason was gone. After all the times he'd hurt her by flaunting his affairs in her face, now he was dead, and that hurt too. But Margo would recover. She always did.

Margo quickly decided who was going to help her. Good-looking, honest, successful, lawyer Paul Martin would be a nice change of pace from the Jason Maxwells of this world. Margo packed her bags and moved to Pine Valley, renting a room from her dear friend Erica Kane's mother, Mona.

Paul found Margo refreshing, she knew he was vulnerable,on the rebound, so she created reasons to see him, offering little tidbits about Jason that she thought he might like to know. They began spending a lot of time together when Paul's wife, Ann, returned from Seattle, where she'd been staying with her brother Linc, who also moved back to Pine Valley. When Paul asked Ann for a divorce, Margo married him on the rebound.

With her husband accused of killing her lover in a jealous rage, Erica, of course, had been devastated by Jason's death.

After all. the scandal had killed her modeling career. Her mother, Mona, who stood by Jeff throughout the ordeal, took the witness stand and began having brief flashes of the night of the murder. She'd been there, in Jason's hotel room. To help her remember more completely, Mona received an injection of sodium pentothal -- truth serum -- and realized she killed Jason Maxwell and blocked it out.

Jeff was cleared of all charges and wasted no time in divorcing Erica so he could marry his beloved Mary Kennicott. Erica was left with nothing.

Phil did everything in his power to win Tara back. But she remained faithful to Chuck for the sake of their baby. She couldn't tell Phillip the truth. Realizing he was the odd man out, Phil turned to Erica for comfort and passion.

Phil continued to see Erica, but even she realized that he still didn't love her and began to doubt that he ever would. If anyone was in his heart, it was Tara. By the time Erica had decided that her affair with Phil was over, she'd become pregnant. And again, she decided that the sensible choice for her was an abortion. But Phil found out about the baby and was overjoyed. He convinced Erica to marry him.

Jeff and Mary couldn't adopt Tad Gardner until the parents, who had abandoned him, were located. But Tad, who was staying with Ruth and Joe, visited often. One afternoon, when Mary was home alone, Tad set out to see her. He didn't know that two armed thugs had broken in and were holding the terrified woman at gun point. When Tad came to the door, she screamed at him to run and he escaped. But the gunmen were trigger-happy, and Mary was killed! Mary's death destroyed Jeff. He realized he could no longer stay in Pine Valley. Joe and Ruth Martin became Tad's legal guardians until a formal adoption could be arranged.

Little Phillip took ill and Tara and Chuck were frantic with worry. Their son desperately needed a blood transfusion! But neither of their blood types matched Little Phillip's! Only Phil Brent's blood could save him!
Phil and Erica's happiness didn't last for long. Erica suffered a miscarriage and was so distraught over the loss that she had a complete nervous breakdown. Phil had to commit her to a mental hospital. During her absence, Phil saved little Phillip's life with his blood. Ruth confirmed what Phil already felt in his heart -- little Philip was his son. Phil suddenly had new hope. Tara and Phil confessed their love to each other and they fell into each other's arms and made love! Tara decided to ask Chuck for a divorce. Phil asked Erica for a divorce -- but she refused. When Chuck discovered that Tara had been unfaithful to him with Phil, he demanded a divorce!

Lincoln Tyler fell deeply in love with Kitty Davis. Nothing Phoebe could say or do, (which included falling into a dead faint in the middle of their wedding ceremony) could keep them from saying their "I do's."

Paul Martin's marriage to Margo turned out to be a loveless affair. She had manipulated him into it, and too late did he realize that he had never loved Margo because he had never stopped loving Ann. And of course, Ann had never stopped loving Paul. Slowly, they began to rekindle their romance from the embers of the past.

Desperate, Margo told Paul she was going to have a baby -- but she was lying. Paul was trapped. Ann couldn't believe the news, but of course, she understood why Paul couldn't leave Margo. But Ann had news of her own -- she was pregnant. And under the circumstances, she couldn't tell Paul. But she had to tell somebody. She turned to her best friend, her ex-husband -- Nick Davis -- who offered to marry her.

All My Children 1973

Nick Davis was shocked when Kitty Shea became pregnant. If he really wasn't sterile, as he'd believed, he'd given up Ann and their marriage for nothing. By now, Ann was married to Paul Martin. When Nick heard about Ann's pregnancy and miscarriage, he ran to her. Realizing he'd been a fool, he confessed his love and the real reason he'd pressured her to divorce him.
Ann was angry at Nick for his lack of trust in her. But she loved him. And when they began seeing each other behind Paul's back, Ann knew she couldn't stay married to Paul any longer. Kitty saw she was losing Nick and she became desperate. She told Ann that she was carrying Nick's baby. Ann went to Nick and insisted that he had to marry Kitty. It was the only right thing to do, especially for their baby.

With Ann leaving him no choice, Nick married Kitty. Shortly after the wedding, Kitty lost the baby, and Nick would have ended their sham of a marriage immediately if not for Kitty's deep depression. Nick stood by her while he watched Ann, the woman he loved, try to make a go of her own marriage to Paul.

Erica became pregnant and headed for an abortion clinic -- without ever telling her husband Jeff. Throughout his troubled marriage with Erica, Mary Kennicott stood by Jeff, silently supporting him. Jeff learned of Erica's deception and forgave her.

Pine Valley rejoiced to learn that Phil Brent was coming home! Tara was rocked by Phillip's return "from the dead." She was Chuck's wife, and as far as the world knew, Chuck was Little Phillip's father -- and a good one. Tara truly loved Chuck. But Phillip was her first love, and in her heart, she knew he was the love of her life. Chuck, delighted as he was over Phil's miraculous return from the dead, was scared. He loved Tara and their son. He prayed that Phil's return didn't destroy his happy home! Feeling great guilt, Ruth decided not to tell her son that he was Little Phillip's father.

As Kitty's mental health improved, she agreed to a divorce. Nick immediately turned to Ann, he loved her so. But Ann, who had grown to love her husband Paul, didn't know what to do. She loved them both. When Ann agreed to meet Nick in New York City, Nick was certain that he was her choice. But Ann chose Paul, and Nick was crushed. Driving Ann back to Pine Valley in a blinding snowstorm Nick was quiet, sullen, thinking more about Ann than the icy road. The car crashed. Ann was critically injured. Upon her recovery, Ann disappeared from Pine Valley.
The more Erica saw of Jason Maxwell in New York City, the less interested she was in being married to Jeff. After months of arguing with Erica over both Jason and her career, Jeff had stopped caring. He had grown even closer to Mary while the two of them doctored and nursed a little boy who had been hospitalized after his parents had abandoned him. Ten-year-old Tad Gardner charmed everyone at Pine Valley Hospital, and no one could believe that his father had pushed him out the car and driven off. As Tad cried out for his mother and his little sister, Jenny, Mary and Jeff took him into their hearts.

Erica asked Jeff for a divorce and became more involved with Jason. Erica's fellow model, Margo Flax, tried to warn her that Jason Maxwell was only toying with her. But Erica knew better and pursued him eagerly. And just to make it even more interesting, she led Jason to believe that her husband Jeff was very jealous of him.

Jason traveled to Pine Valley to set the whole thing straight. From his room at the Valley Inn, he phoned Jeff to come over. Since he'd already agreed to give Erica a divorce, Jeff wondered why in the world Jason Maxwell wanted to see him. He arrived at Jason's door and knocked, no answer. Testing the doorknob, Jeff found the door unlocked. He walked in, there was Jason Maxwell...dead. Jeff was arrested for murder.

All My Children 1972

Still hospitalized, Chuck was getting stronger every day. Tara had to stall whenever he brought up the subject of setting a new date for their wedding because she and Phillip were secretly dating. Phil's induction into the army scared Tara. On the night before Phil had to leave, Phil and Tara drove out of town to secretly marry.

It was a treacherous night. A blizzard had buried the roads in snow, and Phil and Tara were forced to abandon his car. If they stayed in it, they'd freeze. But they noticed a small shack just off the road and took shelter in it. Phil and Tara were alone in a snowstorm. They lit candles and exchanged their own private vows. With only God as their witness, right there in the middle of nowhere, on Phillip's last night before leaving for Vietnam, they became husband and wife. They made love, passionate, tender love for the very first time. And the next day, Phil Brent was Vietnam-bound.

Weeks later, Tara learned she was pregnant with Phil's child. She knew she had to tell Chuck that she couldn't marry him after all. And then the word came. Phillip was missing in action in Vietnam. Grieving for her son, Ruth continued to make impassioned pleas to end the folly of the Vietnam war.

And as both mourned for Phil, Chuck came up with the perfect solution for Tara's predicament - he asked Tara to marry him. Tara and Chuck got married quietly, and surprised everyone by announcing that they'd been married for weeks...and they were going to have a baby!

Phoebe Tyler's fondness for a drink now and then began to get out of hand, and Charles accepted some of the blame. He'd been leaving her home alone with nothing but a glass of sherry for companionship. Most evenings, Phoebe cried into her sherry over her husband's long hours at the hospital and her daughter Ann's consorting with that contemptible Nick Davis.

But nothing Phoebe could say could keep Ann from marrying Nick. They loved each other. Marriage was in the air in Pine Valley. Chuck and Tara, Ann and Nick, and at long last, Joe and Ruth. They had already become the couple most everyone in Pine Valley turned to for comfort, advice and friendship.

Ruth, Joe and Kate helped Joe's brother Paul deal with his unrequited love for Ann Tyler Davis, as she settled into her marriage with Nick. She wanted to give Nick a baby. They would be such wonderful parents. But Ann was unable to become pregnant.

Nick consulted a doctor, who revealed that his sperm count was so low it was unlikely he could father a child. He knew that if he told Ann, she'd tell him not to worry about it. But he also knew how much she wanted a baby. And it killed him knowing that he could never give her one. All he could give her, he decided, was her freedom.
Unwilling to give up on her marriage, Ann seduced Nick into one last night of love. Regretting the weakness of his resolve, Nick asked Ann for a divorce. He never told her why. Ann, convinced that somehow Nick had fallen out of love with her, was heartbroken. Pregnant with Nick's baby, she turned to her lawyer, Paul Martin. He told Ann that Nick didn't have to know about it. He would love to be the baby's father and her husband. Nick began a relationship with a dance instructor, Kitty Shea.

Tara gave birth to a little boy, and she and Chuck named him Charles Phillip Tyler. Tara's brother Jeff was ecstatic to have become an uncle! His wife Erica was less than enthusiastic. Being a small town doctor's wife was no longer her goal. Everything Jeff talked about bored her. His job. His friends. His dreams.

Erica's job at Ann's fashion Boutique had given her a taste of a far more glamorous life. And she wanted more. From the moment Erica met Jason Maxwell, she wanted him...to sign her up as a model at his agency. From the moment he met Erica, Jason wanted her...but not necessarily as a model.

Jeff was waking up to the fact that in Erica, he'd married a very self-involved, selfish young woman.

But he loved her. His best friend, Dr. Frank Grant explained that his wife Nancy had a career, and that they still had a happy marriage. Jeff made himself believe that he and Erica could live with her career. Not that he was lonely when Erica was out of town. More and more, he turned to Mary Kennicott for friendship.

All My Children 1971

Tara tried repeatedly to warn her brother Jeff about Erica. But Jeff was mesmerized by Erica's beauty and flattery. The news of their wedding jolted their families. Marriage to Jeff wasn't anything like she thought it would be! Stuck in a dinky, drab apartment while Jeff spent most of his time at the hospital, Erica grew frustrated. While Erica grew more distant, Jeff found he had much more in common with a sweet nurse, Mary Kennicott.

When Phillip couldn't remember her, Tara turned to Chuck even more. When Chuck proposed, Tara said, "Yes." By the time Phil's memory returned, Tara was engaged to Chuck.

Joe's Grandmother, Kate, encouraged Tara to follow her heart. But with no encouragement from Phillip, Tara couldn't accept Gran's advice. And the day of her wedding to Chuck finally arrived! She was nervous, but determined to marry Chuck.

Nick was convinced that marrying Chuck Tyler would be the biggest mistake she could make! And the more he thought about what Tara was about to do, the angrier he became. He'd been drinking, and when the minister asked that fateful question, "Is there anyone among us who knows why this wedding should not take place?"

Nick spoke up, shouting, "I do! Because Tara still loves Phil!" But Chuck had not heard Nick's statement. In the same moment that all heads turned to Nick, Chuck collapsed, his kidneys had failed. The wedding was over before it was finished.

Ironically, it was their mutual and deep concern for Chuck that brought Tara and Phil together again. As Chuck hovered between life and death in the hospital from his kidney problem, Tara and Phil kept a constant vigil.

While they waited, Phil tried to reassure Tara. His hand touched hers. And even if Phil had tried to deny it, Tara knew from that touch. He still loved her. And she could no longer pretend to herself that she didn't love him. After barely clinging to life, Chuck finally rallied. The doctors told Tara that they were convinced that it was his love for her that pulled him through and that his recovery would be a slow one. Tara knew she would have to remain Chuck's fiancee until he fully recovered! And Phil agreed to wait until the time was right for them to be together. While Chuck slowly recovered, Phil received his draft notice -- he was headed for Vietnam!

Erica dropped out of college and began a new job at Ann Tyler's Boutique. The job kept her going on buying trips to New York City. This was her destiny.

All My Children 1970

They were meant to be together......

They longed to be together! But in All My Children's first major love story, a labyrinth of complications threatened to keep teenage sweethearts, Phillip Brent and Tara Martin far apart.

Among the many obstacles were Phil's best friend Chuck Tyler, who had a crush on Tara, and saucy Erica Kane, who had her eye on Phil.

Phil's mother, Ruth Brent, was a nurse at Pine Valley Hospital. Her husband, Ted was a used car salesman who struggled to make enough money to support his family. He resented her close friendship with her colleague, widower Dr. Joe Martin and he didn't like Ruth's younger sister Amy Tyler or her endless involvement in Phil's life. And he didn't like Amy's rich lawyer husband, Lincoln who made Ted feel inferior. Ted was unhappy, short-tempered, and always complaining. As he began to drink, Ruth's love and patience with him were wearing thin.

Phillip had always been close to his Aunt Amy, who didn't want him or her husband Linc to know that he was the center of her life. Amy loved Lincoln Tyler, but not even he, she felt, could understand or forgive her need to be close to her nephew.

Charles and Phoebe Tyler had three children. Oldest son Charles Tyler II, having died in an automobile accident with his wife many years earlier, had left them a grandson to raise. Their son Lincoln had become a fine attorney, and Phoebe had hopes he would run for office one day . . . if Amy's politics didn't get in the way. Their daughter Ann was in New York City pursuing a career in the fashion industry. And Chuck, who wanted to become a doctor someday, had become more son than grandson to them.

Erica's mother, Mona Kane, divorced her philandering film-director husband Eric after he ran out on her when their daughter Erica was a little girl. Although she was vain and self-centered, Erica was popular. Especially with the boys! For the most part, she dated Chuck Tyler. But the only person she really wanted was Phil Brent! And she'd do anything to get close to him.

Tara saw what Erica was doing and griped about her to her father Joe and Grandma Kate. Tara's brother Jeff had seen Erica at the hospital cafeteria after she'd been to her mother's office and liked what he saw!

But Tara didn't like or trust Erica, and she warned Jeff to wise up to her.

Former Pine Valley resident Nick Davis returned to open a dance studio. Looking for some quick cash, Nick flattered Phoebe Tyler, who cooed over every compliment. While Nick waltzed Phoebe, he renewed his friendship with Mona and met Erica and her friends. He especially liked Phil Brent. Nick's friendship with Phillip upset his Aunt Amy, who quickly alerted her sister Ruth that Nick was back in town. Neither had ever expected to see him again.

Nick, who had been Amy's first love, left her alone and pregnant with a child he didn't even know he fathered! After giving birth to Nick's son, Phil, Amy gave the child to her sister Ruth to raise -- with the promise that Phil was never to know that his aunt Amy was really his mother. Both agreed that Nick must never know that Phillip was his son!

Phil faced peril on the night when a gas leak in the Brent basement nearly knocked him out. When Nick Davis drove up to return a notebook, he saw lights on in the house but no one answered the bell. Finding the door unlocked, he entered and smelled gas! In a panic, he ran through the house until he found a groggy Phil collapsed on the floor.

In the hospital, Amy revealed to Nick and Linc that she was Phil's real mother. Nick wanted to tell Phil the truth, but Amy convinced him not to breathe a word. However, Phil learned the truth about his adoption from Erica, who had overheard the secret and blabbed it to Phil. Distraught and upset over the revelation, Amy left town and never returned to Pine Valley.
Phil confronted his parents over the lie they'd all lived with for 18 years, Ruth was devastated and Ted went on a drinking rampage. He headed out to confront Nick - but never made it. On the way to Nick's, Ted died in a car crash.

Wanting to sort out his life, Phil broke his engagement to Tara, and left Pine Valley to lose himself in New York City. And lose himself he did, when an accident caused him to suffer amnesia. Chuck, feeling the loss of his best friend Phil almost as much as Tara, did his best to pick up her spirits. The crush on her which he had long tried to suppress began to grow into something more.

Ruth Brent grew closer to her friend and colleague, Joe Martin. Joe and his mother Kate rejoiced when Joe's brother Paul who had been presumed missing in Vietnam, turned up alive and returned to Pine Valley.

Ann Tyler moved back home to open The Boutique, a fashion shop, and fell in love with Nick Davis. In New York, Nick found Phil and learned he had amnesia, he convinced him to return to Pine Valley. Perhaps in familiar surroundings, his memory would return. Tara was crushed that he couldn't know her. And even if he couldn't remember her, Phil wasn't too thrilled to see this girl who, everyone said, was his girlfriend dating this guy Chuck who was supposed to be his best friend.

Erica also entered PVU, not that she had the slightest interest in studying anything, she already knew everything she needed to know. To get what she wanted, all she had to do was smile. And she kept flashing that dazzling smile at Jeff Martin.
