All My Children, Aug 1977

August 1977

Kitty died in Linc's arms. Nick accused Erica of setting it up when Mona found them together in bed. Erica drooled over ex-football hero Tom and was impressed that he was the one who saved little Phil---who insisted on staying with Chuck. Phil and Tara worried that if Donna married Chuck, she, having no child care experience, would raise little Phil. Phoebe had Benny secretly photograph Charles and Mona in innocent but suggestive situations. Brooke and Dan met at the beach. Nick agreed to help Tom open a restaurant.

Donna agreed to marry Chuck. Phil decided to get legal custody of little Phillip. Erica quit working for Nick to work at Tom's new restaurant, the Goal Post. Nancy admitted to Caroline that she still loves Frank. Phoebe warned Dan not to see Brooke again, after trapping them into admitting they spent the weekend together. Brooke said she'd blow the whistle to Charles about her scheming if Phoebe didn't stop interfering.

Mark took a shine to Ellen, rather than Devon. Erica teamed up with Phoebe to discredit Donna, who was upset that Chuck won't get custody of little Phil because of her past. Frank told Nancy that their night together was only a fling, but their divorce was then stalled in the courts. Paul suggested that Ellen manage Kitty's boutique after Myrtle insisted she's leaving town. Paul and Ruth learned that Anne is making progress in the sanitarium.

Donna and Chuck decided to rush to the altar to halt any interference from Phoebe or the custody controversy. Tom sweet-talked Erica, and vice versa. She insisted to Nick that she won't be Nick's backstreet mistress. Ellen failed to stifle her increasing attraction toward Mark. Devon was disappointed to learn that Danny is bananas over Brooke

ALL MY CHILDREN

May 1979

Tara is upset at the prospect of Phil taking an out-of-town government assignment. Phoebe is gladdened by the discovery that Charlie still considers her his grandmother. Myrtle helps Kelly plan how to overcome her pill addiction. Wally’s mother holds little hope his marriage to Devon will succeed. With Caroline in North Carolina, Frank dreams of one day being a full-time father to Carl. Mark’s latest attempt to reunite with Ellen is futile. Estelle agrees to stay with Donna and Chuck if she can help with the housework and the baby once it arrives. Russ tells a recuperating Nancy why he considers her more than a friend. Billy Clyde swears to Letty Jean that if he can’t have Estelle, nobody will.

Phil decides to accept the job as un undercover narcotics agent in Washington D.C.. Ruth is suffering early morning queasiness and dizzy spells. When Brooke answers Mark’s phone, Erica decides to break up what she figures is a budding romance by having Dan learn about it. Phoebe causes a deep rift in Benny and Estelle’s affair. Langley turns his attention from Edna to Phoebe when he sees bigger dollar signs. After Chuck collapses at the hospital, he and Donna plan a getaway vacation to Willow Lake. With Claudette still away, Eddie plans to remodel the Chateau.

Realizing Brooke and Mark are having an affair, Dan decides to leave Pine Valley, then changes his mind. Tom learns that Erica made sure Dan found Brooke and Mark together. Aware that Dottie doesn’t like him and that Phoebe has more money than Edna, Langley turns his attention to the Tyler mansion. Kelly, falling for Linc, fears he only cares for her because she reminds him of Kitty – an idea planted by Phoebe. When Tom turns down a cologne endorsement, Erica promises the company they can have both Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cudahy in the ad. To Myrtle’s disappointment, Kelly is going away for a couple of days with Eddie while the Chateau is being refurbished.

Phil, Tara and Charlie depart for Washington, D.C.. Medical exam shows Ruth is pregnant. Brooke tells a heartbroken Dan she wants to end relations with him because it’s Mark she loves. But Mark tells Brooke he considers her little more than a hooker whom he never wants to see again. Suffering from a strangulated hernia, Billy Clyde refuses surgery until Estelle agrees to return to him. Calling from Carolina, Caroline informs Frank she’s going to file for divorce.

When Dr. Clayder discovers that Donna’s unborn baby is dead, he informs Chuck who decides not to tell Donna since she must still deliver it or risk losing her life. At Father Tierney’s suggestion, Tom tries to persuade Erica to attend a marriage encounter clinic; she agrees providing he agrees to endorse cologne in a national advertising campaign. Ruth and Joe plan to wait a few months before announcing her pregnancy. Dan confronts Mark at a bar but is too drunk to fight effectively. In the hospital, Billy Clyde is having bad dreams of being left by his mother.

June 1979

Just as Chuck is about to tell Donna the baby is dead, she goes into labor. Langley’s charms work on Phoebe. Edna is upset when she turns down a date with Benny only to have Langley break date with her. Aware that Frank knows the truth about Carl Jr. being his son, Nancy rejects his marriage proposal because she’s used to being her own woman. Knowing that his relationship with Brooke is over, Dan accepts an architectural post in Florida. Devon and Wally are having bedroom problems.

Freaked out on pills, Kelly goes to Eddie but returns home when Myrtle comes for her. Chuck tells Donna their perfectly-formed baby son was stillborn. Blaming herself, Donna fears it is the end of her marriage. When Tara begins to feel under the weather, Ruth goes to Washington to look after Charlie. When Tom’s Adonis commercial conflicts with the marriage encounter group, Erica tries to get him to abandon the encounter session. When Edna realizes she’s been set up by Langley, she turns to Benny who feels rejected by Estelle. Benny admits to Brooke he wouldn’t mind marrying Edna because he wants children and because he loves her young daughter Dottie.

Donna and Chuck’s stillborn son is buried next to Chuck’s parents. At a dinner party, Phoebe holds for new resident Palmer Cortland and his daughter Nina, Nina is felled by an appendicitis attack. Cliff Warner, the surgical resident, is forced to perform surgery on the diabetic Nina who has taken an immediate liking to the young doctor. Father Tierney comes to Erica’s rescue when he tells Tom the marriage encounter can be conducted any weekend, but the commercial for Adonis Cologne must be shot on a certain day. Mark prepares for a weekend in Long Island and Brooke intends to show up without an invitation.

Tom’s knee goes out the day he and Erica are to do the cologne ad but she manages to help get him through the photo session. He fumes that Erica plots to turn his commercial into a sexy come on featuring her. Nurse Sybil Thorne and Palmer try to end Nina and Cliff’s budding romance. She lies to Nina about Cliff being a Romeo. Brooke and Mark’s Long Island idyll is interrupted when she learns her mother is seriously ill. At Erica’s insistence, Tom agrees to give the Goal Post royal decorations. Linc’s old flame, Cynthia Ewing, comes to Pine Valley. When Nancy tells Frank no to marriage or parental rights where Carl is concerned, he refuses to take no for an answer. Russ feels he has lost Nancy. Erica admits to Mona she still cares for Nick. Myrtle insists she won’t stop helping Kelly fight her pill habit. Eddie taunts Kelly saying Linc is tempted by Cynthia. Phoebe consents to help Donna become sophisticated after Chuck threatens to leave town.

July 1979

Langley fears Myrtle will recognize him for her days as a carnival girl. Charlie comes to Pine Valley for a visit. Palmer makes Nina think because she is diabetic, she will never have a normal relationship with a man. Phoebe’s birthday dinner at the Chateau turns into a less than joyous occasion when she spots Ellen and Paul dancing. In the powder room of the Chateau, Phoebe tells Ellen to stay away from Paul. Furious when she discovers that Frank told Russ she was planning to remarry him, Nancy tells Frank to get lost. Langley romances Phoebe and convinces her to spring for a house redecorating job from which he’ll get kickbacks. Tad reacts badly to Ruth’s pregnancy. Benny goes to Edna’s bed, then runs to Estelle.

Eddie saves Kelly from drowning in a bathtub after another pill incident. Kelly refuses Linc’s pleas that she leave Eddie. Tom agrees to do the commercials in Pine Valley after Erica offered to drop the whole project in order to save their marriage, but agent Richmond is after Erica’s body. Nancy gets fed up with Frank’s demands on her and Carl’s time. Tad feigns illness out of fear that Joe and Ruth won’t want him now that they’re expecting a child of their own. Brooke moves into Mark’s pad. Donna returns home. Benny considers marrying Edna after Estelle told him it’s over between them. Sybil ignores Betsy Kennicott’s warning that Cliff and Nina are falling in love.

Paul and Ellen agree to be friends only for Ann’s sake. Linc convinces Kelly that they can be happy together. Langley brings his cohort Anthony Evans to remodel Phoebe’s mansion and to take her for a financial ride. Brooke jumps on Nina’s bandwagon to match up with Cliff. Palmer makes cruise plans for Nina and himself while their mysterious housekeeper Myra listens at keyholes. Ruth assures Tad she’ll still love him when her own child is born. Benny and Edna become engaged. Paul advises Frank that he doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on regarding Carl.

Linc gives Kelly a diamond pendant but she decides to return the gift. Coming back to Pine Valley, Claudette discovers Eddie has taken her job as the Chateau manager. In an attempt to forestall her rendezvous with Stu Richmond, the Adonis advertising agent, Erica feigns a broken ankle but Stu arrives at the apartment. With Stu almost mauling Erica on the bed, Tom walks in. Erica decides to choose Tom over her modeling career. Donna tries to bring Estelle and Benny together after he becomes engaged to Edna, but the plan fails when Billy Clyde arrives on the scene. Palmer tries to convince Nina that Cliff is a fortune hunter. Frank plans to let Carl know he is his father, regardless of Nancy’s wishes.

August 1979

Erica resumes her disco plans behind Tom’s back and hooks Wally into the plot. Phoebe puts the scare into Ruth, indicating a woman her age can’t expect to produce a healthy child. Ellen refuses to listen to Paul’s talk about divorcing Anne. Palmer accuses Brooke of being a bad influence on Nina, who continues to see Cliff despite Palmer’s objections. Claudette is in the dumps because she can’t find a job with either Eddie or Erica, but decides Linc might be her meal ticket. Kelly realizes she loves Linc, despite Phoebe’s taunts that she’s not good enough for him.

For some dark, unknown reasons, Palmer knuckles under to Myra’s demands that he cancel the trip with Nina. Donna makes a fool of herself while trying to act the social lady. Erica convinces Phoebe to invest in her disco plans. Phoebe and Mark warn Brooke about “accidental” pregnancies. Eddie vows revenge when Linc and Kelly reconcile. Linc loans Claudette money but says there are no romantic strings attached. Phoebe falls for Langley’s “I love you” line. Estelle prays for Benny’s happiness when he marries Edna. Benny drops assaults charges against Billy Clyde. Palmer puts the bug in Nina’s ear that Cliff is just after her money. Paul arranges a New York trip with Ellen.

Linc is in the dark that Kelly’s still popping pills and secretly trying to enroll in a detoxification program, although temptation gets the better of her. Langley finally hits pay dirt with Phoebe by taking her to bed. Paul follows Ellen to New York. She melts into his arms while Mark smolders and gets bored with Brooke’s marital and pregnancy intentions. Sybil lays a seduction attempt for Cliff but he resists. Sybil doesn’t give Cliff Nina’s messages. Tom must have surgery on his bum knee and Erica lies to him to get money for her disco plans. Linc and Eddie come to fighting blows over Kelly. As Benny and Estelle wed, Estelle offers a prayer for their happiness. Benny, while saying his vows, pictures Estelle in Edna’s place. Wally and his architect friend Jerry begin renovation on the Goal Post and Erica’s disco. Visiting Anne in the sanitarium, Charles has some hope for her recovery.

In the sanitarium, Anne begins talking about Paul as he talks to Ellen about divorcing Anne. Eddie tries to paw Claudette after she begged for a hostess job. Claudette and Myrtle are trying to uncover Eddie’s shady deals. Sybil pulls a friendship act on Nina while Palmer hires a detective to dig up dirt on Cliff. Ruth has an amniocentesis test, and Tom is prepared for knee surgery. Edna fails to talk Kelly into joining a drug-care unit. Kelly turns to Billy for more pills. Donna learns Langley and Phoebe’s bedroom rendezvous and wrangles an invitation to Phoebe’s refurnished-house party by threatening to blow the whistle on Phoebe and Langley. Mark kicks Brooke out of his pad. Spotting money, Eddie goes after Brooke. Langley gets bug-eyed after watching Phoebe stash her jewels in a wall safe and he memorizes the combination. Kate agrees that Anne probably won’t ever be released from the sanitarium.

General Hospital June--Aug 1978

June 1978

Police continue to question Lesley about David’s murder. Laura is distraught because she cannot remember the events that took place the night David was killed. Lee rebuffs Gail’s offer to help him fight his alcoholism. Scotty is angry because Bobbie comes close to telling Darren to get lost. Katie tells Lamont she loves him and almost believes it herself. Heather confides to her mother that she wants to give Jeff a child right away.

Police tell Lesley she cannot leave town. When Laura disappears and heads for Barbara Vining’s, Rick and Jeff go there to bring her back. Darren plans to leave town. Rooney admits that he made a deposit in Mark’s bank account at Lamont’s request. Mark realizes that Lamont blackmailed Katie in some way to get her to stay with him. Before he can talk to Katie though, Lamont sends her out of town with his sister. Lee’s drinking is destroying his law practice.

Steve and Audrey’s new house is completed. Lamont withdraws the grant to renew the surgical wing. In Boston, Mark makes Katie admit she still loves him. Steve, displeased by Lee’s inability to function as the hospital attorney, is shocked to see him drinking at the Floating Rib Restaurant. Laura, again, runs away to Barbara Vining’s and is furious when Barbara informs Lesley and has her taken back to Port Charles. Renewing their friendship, Gail agrees to be Monica’s matron of honor. When her mother falls asleep while watching P.J., Diana feels she cannot trust her and reminds her that Martha was also killed when she was watching her. Heather admonishes Susan to stay away from Peter Taylor, but Susan says she has a right to happiness and her happiness may include Peter.

Lesley is indicted on first-degree murder charges. Laura agrees to see Peter for counseling. With Lamont completely well, Katie and Mark declare their love and Lamont tells them he will back off and let her have divorce. Lee listens to his AA sponsor and says he will try to stay on wagon. Dorrie warns Bobbie not to count on Lamont’s promise of a yacht weekend because of his problems with Katie.

Monica and Alan wed but their honeymoon is postponed when Monica is called before a grand jury. Peter insists Diana see a psychiatrist to get over her fear of losing P.J.. Otherwise, he says, their marriage will never work. Heather wants Susan to stay away from Peter. Lee tries desperately to stay on the wagon. After Lamont tells Bobbie that the New York holiday is off, she vows never to get involved with a patient again and refuses his money.

July 1978

Indicted for first-degree murder, Lesley continues to tell Laura she must never admit that her relationship with David was more than friendship. Although police realize the statuette wasn’t the murder weapon, they feel it holds the key to David’s murder and intend to find out who purchased it. Laura recalls she forged Les’s name to sales slip when she bought the statuette for David but doesn’t tell Lesley. Gina gets a medical grant that will take her out of town for a while. Heather’s mother receives a letter from a New York lawyer saying Heather’s former landlady has a package for her. Spotting the letter, Susan intends to learn about the package. Howard asks Lee to help him on Lesley’s case, but the first day on the job, Lee gets drunk and misses an appointment. Scotty is cooling toward Bobbie.

Police discover sales slip for the statuette was signed by Lesley. Howard walks in on Lesley while she is destroying the evidence implicating Laura in David’s murder. Heather’s mother finds a love letter that passed between David and Laura. Alan’s sister Tracy warns Monica that Alan bristles whenever Rick’s name is mentioned. A frantic Scotty continues to search for a missing Lee. When he sees Heather teasing Jeff in the hall, Steve fears having Heather as a wife is going to ruin Jeff’s medical career. Tracy has her eye on Rick.

Laura begins to remember what happened the night David was killed. Rick is wondering why Laura didn’t hear the phone ring for almost two hours the night of the death. Lee phones Scotty, who traces the call to a sleazy motel. Diana warns Susan not to turn her therapy sessions with Peter into anything else. Newlyweds Mark and Katie arrive home, but Mark is off to Mexico to perform a delicate operation. Laura tells Lesley she feels Lesley welcomed David’s advances. Steve is concerned Heather will take Jeff away from medical studies. Diana is suffering blurred vision.

Heather fears Diana will have dizzy spells while taking care of P.J.. A mysterious Mr. Jameson calls Jeff claiming to have information about Steven Lars. Although she knows she’s not in good health, Diana plans to return to nursing in order to be near Peter. Laura begins to remember what happened the night that David was killed, and visualizes pushing him and his striking his head on the mantle. Bobbie is jealous when Laura tries to see Scotty. Lee, on the wagon, agrees to help out as Lesley's counsel but admits it's becoming harder and harder not to take a drink.

August 1978

Lesley discovers Laura purchased the statuette found in David's apartment but charged it to Lesley's account. Bobbie is angry at Scotty for trying to help Laura. Out to dinner, Jessie sees Lee having a drink. Jeff warns Heather to stay out of Peter and Diana's problems. Heather is beginning to resent the time Jeff spends studying with Steve for medical board. Although Howard is unattached, Tracy is interested in Gary, not Howard. A homesick Teri writes Jeff from Hawaii; Steve fears Teri's return because she is the only other person who knows he is really Jeff’s father. On the witness stand, Jeff admits David once had tried to seduce Lesley before he was murdered.

Searching David's apartment, police find bits of Laura's love letter in his chandelier; police match it up with characters on Lesley's typewriter. Laura begins to feel she must tell police it was her push that caused David's death. Gina returns from Denver, plans to set up research unit in Port Charles. Bobbie is displeased by Scotty's decision to room with young doctor Bryan Phillips, because of Bryan's alcoholic past.

On the witness stand, Lesley claims she was David’s lover. Rick realizes Lesley is protecting Laura and plans to stop her. After nightmares about prison, Laura resists hypnosis Peter wants to use to help her remember what happened the night David was killed. Lesley is convicted of manslaughter and is remanded without bail until sentencing. Alan is leery of Monica and Rick’s close relationship. Tracy is egging Alan’s jealousy on.

Fearing Rick knows she accidentally killed David, Laura runs away. Scotty believes she may be in New York trying to get lost in the East Village. Diana undergoes examination which uncovers a neurological disorder. Jeff feels he must tell Peter that Diana is ill. Bobbie flares up over Scotty's concern for Laura, although Bobbie's seeing Chris Jergens (the Hospital orderly) on the sly. Tracy is fanning Alan's jealousy of Rick. Katie prepares to join Mark in Mexico. Gary is not totally pleased that Gina may have to spend time out of town working on her research project.

ALL MY CHILDREN Jan--Aug 1978

January 1978

Nick frets when he finds a note from Erica which implies she’s contemplating suicide, although, unbeknownst to him, she’s actually on a vacation designed to make him pop the question. Wanting to find out if Donna can even have children, Chuck persuaded her to take a test which she thinks is being given only to verify her pregnancy. Billy Clyde beat Estelle after she visited the elderly lady, Maggie, who befriended her in church. Claudette made a play for Linc. Phoebe continued to feign paralysis. Trying to keep Devon away from Dan, Brooke warned goody-two-shoes Devon that Dan would expect her to go to bed with him. Jeff revealed to Christina that Ray spent several nights at Edna’s cabin. Flattered when Jeff said he loved her, Christina told him she’ll always consider him a good friend.

Ray continued to up his adoption price to Ruth and Joe. David planned to use the fact that Ray spent several nights at Edna’s to win a divorce from her. After Nancy told Carl she’s expecting Frank’s child, he asked her to marry him. Tests having revealed Donna’s tubal ligation, Dr. Clayder told Chuck she’s having a hysterical pregnancy. Phil fumed to hear Tara blaming Chuck’s woes on the fact that she divorced him. Chuck dreamed of remarrying Tara. Mona and Nick continued to worry over Erica’s whereabouts. Dan told Brooke he’s through with her.

Trying to renew a modeling career in New York, Erica contracted viral pneumonia. Flying to her hospital bedside, Nick admitted he loves her. Nancy turned down Carl’s marriage proposal. Hoping to win Charles back, Phoebe claimed if they went on a religious pilgrimage, she would be able to walk; he called the idea nonsense. After David pushed her, Edna told everyone he is a wife-beater. After Ray threatened Tad, Ruth withdrew all offers of money and said she will see him in court. Learning she cannot have children and is not pregnant, Donna considered running away. Nancy’s positive pregnancy test was accidentally sent to Caroline!

Nick proposed marriage to a critically ill Erica. Although everyone thinks he has taken a powder, Ray Gardner is still in Pine Valley and planned to take the Martins for a financial ride. Nancy told Caroline she is expecting Carl’s child. Christina grew tired of David’s demands and jealousy. With Erica ill in New York, Tom hired Brooke to be the Goalpost’s new hostess. Linc found Claudette’s company very comforting. Benny told Charles he would help Phoebe stay on the wagon. Not wanting to lose Dan to Devon, Brooke was, more than ever, out to get him. During a session with Dr. Polk, Donna recalled her father had wanted to molest her. Poor Ruth ended up being raped by Ray.

February 1978

After being raped by Ray Gardner, Ruth sustained serious head injuries. Caroline suspects Nancy is carrying Frank’s baby. Tom told Brooke he always wanted to be a priest, not a football player. Benny convinces Phoebe he needs her at home. Christina is losing respect for David because he allows Edna to run his life. Donna finally realized she has been made sterile. Nancy announced her plan to marry Carl. David showed Christina an engagement ring.

With Erica on the mend, Nick confided to Mona that he doesn’t intend to marry her. Tara was fearful that Phil would personally exact revenge on Ray Gardner for raping Ruth. Aware that her former pimp Tyrone had her tubes tied, Donna runs away. Tired of playing second fiddle to Edna’s demands, Christina returned David’s engagement ring. Tom seemed upset to hear that Nick and Erica are engaged. Ellen agreed to marry Mark in a year if they both feel the same toward each other. After Caroline confronted Frank over Nancy’s pregnancy, he admitted he might be the father.

Regaining consciousness, Ruth remembered Ray Gardner raped her. Phil’s partner, Mel Jacoby, thought Phil should take himself off the Gardner investigation. Estelle told Chuck that a missing Donna had a bottle of sleeping pills when she ran away. Although Nancy assured Frank she is carrying Carl’s child, he didn’t believe her. Nancy and Carl had to postpone their marriage when they arrive at the License Bureau after it closed. Benny discovered Phoebe can walk but agrees to keep her secret. Little Phil goes on cleanup detail. Edna seduced David. Nick tried to tell Erica there will be no marriage.

Remembering that she was raped by Ray Gardner, Ruth felt she must press charges but feared it will affect Tad. Trying to protect Estelle, Billy Clyde stabbed Ray. Dan confided to Mark he likes Devon but desires Brooke for creature comforts. After spending the afternoon with Brooke, Dan is fired from the campus Bookstore. When Linc takes her to a society dinner, Claudette offers to help him redo the apartment he shared with Kitty.

March 1978

Phoebe led Chuck to believe the police think that Donna is dead. Donna turned up at Maggie’s apartment. Learning that Ray Gardner will recover from the knife wounds inflicted by Billy Clyde, Phil urged Ruth to prosecute him for rape. Brooke told Phoebe she is out to take Dan away from Devon. Livid because Mark let Paul know he and Ellen have a thing going, Ellen refused to see Mark. Having hinted to Linc he would kill Edna to gain full custody of Dottie, David considered poisoning her. The judge agreed to suspend Phoebe’s weekend sentence and she plans to use fake paralysis to re-snag Charles.

Accepting an out-of-town job, Nick told Erica the wedding is off. Caroline was relieved when Nancy assured her she will marry Carl Blair and move to Chicago. David continued to plot Edna’s demise. Linc had second thoughts about letting Claudette redecorate his apartment. Mark feared Ellen was becoming too interested in Paul Martin. Dan helped plan Devon’s surprise birthday party, but still dated Brooke. Billy Clyde discovered the missing Donna hiding out at Maggie’s. Brooke learns Phoebe can walk.

Learning Donna is in Center City, Phoebe paid Billy Clyde not to tell Chuck. Edna confused ill effects from pills David slipped her for morning sickness. Joe was furious when Ray Gardner called to talk with Ruth. Brooke plotted to spoil Devon’s surprise party. Erica refused to accept the fact that Nick does not intend to marry her. Flying in from Chicago to marry Nancy, Carl’s plane crashed.

After marrying Nancy at his hospital bedside to give her unborn baby his name, Carl then died as result of the injuries he suffered in the plane crash. Learning Donna is in Center City, Chuck went to her and she agreed to return with him to Pine Valley. Claudette is the new manager of the Chateau but Freddie, the Bartender did not like her bossy methods. Learning Edna is not pregnant, David put aside his plan to poison her – for the time being. Ruth decided to press rape charges against Ray Gardner. Phil caught Chuck and Tara in an innocent embrace. Caroline learned Nancy’s unborn child is Frank’s, not Carl’s.

Erica was humiliated when Nick left town after taking her to bed. Benny suggested to Donna that she and Chuck move out of Pine Valley. Phoebe talked Charles into being her physician. Getting a letter from Ray Gardner claiming to have information that can affect Tad’s future, Ruth visited him in jail. Phil feared Tara is wishing she were still married to Chuck. Benny has a thing for Estelle. Donna planned to have surgery to reverse her tubal ligation.

April 1978

David froze while performing an appendectomy after Christina told him they are through because he slept with Edna. David continued to slowly poison Edna. After Chuck refused Donna’s request that they move out of town, she warned him not to see Tara. Little Phillip wants to be called Charlie. Ray informed Ruth that Tad’s mother is still alive. Edna set her sights on Tom, but so did Brooke. Caroline and Donna realized they are both desperate to have children in order to hold on to their husbands. Myrtle Lum calls Linc and says she has seen “Kitty”. Ann’s doctor tells Paul to give up hope for her recovery.

Sentenced to 25 years for raping Ruth, as well as assault, battery and theft, Ray Gardner threatened to get back at the Martins someday. Undergoing surgery to reverse her tubal ligation, Donna feared it would fail. Charles informed Phoebe that Ann will have to be institutionalized permanently. Ellen confronted Dan about his seeing Brooke while claiming to be true to Devon. Frank was ecstatic when Caroline said she wants to have a baby right away. Phil was furious because Little Phil wants to be called Charlie. Estelle told Phoebe to leave Donna alone, or she will reveal Phoebe can walk.

Christina accepted Jeff’s engagement ring but decided not to wear it for the time being. Tad was relieved his father Ray Gardner was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping Ruth. Angry because he feels rejected by Little Phil and suspecting a fling between Tara and Chuck, Phil planned to move into Claudette’s spare bedroom but changed his mind and went back to Tara. Dan and Ellen urged Devon to attend a Yale weekend with her former high school boyfriend from St. Louis. Phoebe was crushed by the news that Ann will not recover from her emotional collapse.

David, stepping up dosages to poison Edna, accidentally took the lethal potion himself. Christina was implicated in David’s death. Tara became upset when an intimate evening with Philip was ruined by an emergency police call. Donna was discharged from the hospital. Nancy confided to Donna that she can’t let Frank know she’s expecting his baby. Myrtle realized Kitty is dead and told an enraged Kelly, Kitty’s look-a-like, that she’s not her mother.

May 1978

Returning from vacation, Jeff discovered Christina was being held for the murder of David. Tara was upset because a another romantic evening with Philip was spoiled, yet again, by an emergency call. Linc is trying to determine if Kitty was Kelly’s twin sister. Phoebe walked in on Brooke and Dan making love in the Beach House! Billy Clyde asked Estelle to marry him just before Benny told Estelle he’s crazy about her. Phoebe’s plan to throw Brooke out of the Beach House was thwarted when Brooke realizes Phoebe was never paralyzed. Tara was angry when Phil refused to have dinner with Donna and Chuck – a dinner planned by Donna to keep an eye on Tara and Chuck’s friendship.

Christina was booked and held for psychiatric observation in the murder of Dr. David Thornton. Jeff discovered David was pilfering digitoxin from the hospital. Ruth told Phil his jealousy of Chuck is unreasonable. Tara and Chuck both dreamt they were together again. Furious after Dan told her they were through because he can’t concentrate on his school work, Brooke swore to get even. Kelly’s agent, Eddie, wanted her to return to Chicago for a nightclub gig, but she landed a singing job at the Chateau and found out Kitty was her twin. Learning from Erica that Paul and Ellen saw each other in New York, Phoebe tells Paul his behavior is abominable. He tells her to mind her own business.

Nancy almost suffered a miscarriage, but Frank managed to save the baby. David’s funeral was held. Kelly, grateful to learn Kitty is her twin, told Linc and Myrtle she isn’t and cannot be Kitty. When Eddie insisted Kelly get more for performing at the Chateau, Linc secretly paid the difference. Rebuffed by Tom in favor of Erica, Brooke cried on Dan's shoulder and told him about her sad, unloved childhood. Devon spots Dan and Brooke cuddling in the library. Mark bought Ellen a diamond ring even though Paul and Ellen’s friendship continued to grow, but Mark accused Paul of trying to take Ellen away from him.

Billy Clyde made certain Benny and Estelle stayed away from each other by intercepting their phone calls. After Billy Clyde promised she can quit streetwalking, Estelle agreed to marry him. Jeff set out to prove that Dottie switched the glass containing poison, accidentally causing David’s death. Ellen told Mark she cannot accept his engagement ring. Mel Jacobi’s wife, B.J., threatened to take their child and leave him unless he quit the police force. Devon continued to pretend she didn’t see Dan and Brooke cuddling in the library. Edna took an apartment in Donna and Chuck’s building.

June 1978

Cleared of all charges in connection with David’s death, Christina agreed to marry Jeff but asked that no one else be present at the ceremony. Little Philip snuck out of the house to go steal hubcaps with friend Sammy. Nancy developed an infection which threatened the life of her unborn child. Devon invited her former high school boyfriend, from St. Louis, Wally McFadden, to Pine Valley to make Dan jealous. Erica flared up when Mona got Mark to talk to her about going slow in her relationship with Tom. Phoebe plotted to get Kelly out of town. A judge ruled Joe and Ruth can adopt Tad immediately.

Finding the watch Chuck gave Charlie on the ground, Phil figured that it was Charlie and Sammy who set the car in the used-car lot on fire. Frank was upset by Caroline’s attitude toward Nancy’s illness. Donna plotted to bring Benny and Estelle together even though Estelle is engaged to Billy Clyde. Devon encouraged Wally to think he’s the only one she ever cared about. Joe and Ruth prepared to adopt Tad. Dan graduated from college. Paul suggested that Ellen incorporate The Boutique and that he help her with the official papers. Eddie was upset when Kelly announced that he is her fiance on a local talk show.

Tara was appalled by Phil’s decision to turn Charlie in for setting a car on fire in the used-parts lot. Kelly’s departure from Pine Valley was postponed when Eddie was hospitalized with severe stomach pains. Maggie was struck by a car when Billy Clyde let her off across the street from her apartment instead of at her door. Near death, Maggie told Estelle she is leaving her $20.000. An inexperienced Wally and Devon shared their first night of love. Erica revealed to Paul that Mark is her brother, and asked Paul to stop seeing Ellen. Disappointed to learn she is not pregnant, Caroline went along with Frank’s suggestion that he take fertility test – but secretly thought it senseless since Nancy is expecting his child. Phoebe feared Linc may fall in love with Kelly because she reminds him of Kitty.

Erica decided to take instruction in the Catholic Church. Tara warned Phil she would leave him if he turned Charlie in for starting the fire, but he does so anyway. After Phil accused Chuck of trying to take Tara away from him, Chuck got drunk even though alcohol could cause his kidney condition to flare up. After Chuck told a crushed Erica the only person she’s out for is herself, she got Tom to take her away for a weekend in order to heal her bruised feelings. Mark wondered if Ellen is falling for Paul. Billy Clyde wanted to learn Maggie’s secret before Estelle does. As Christina and Jeff moved into the Martin home, Kate was uncertain if marriage to Christina was the best thing for Jeff. Just as Nancy was about to be discharged from the hospital, Caroline accused Nancy of trying to have Frank re-enter her life. Frank was amazed when Caroline suggests they leave Pine Valley. Charles says Eddie should have his gall bladder removed.

Tara and Phil separated, and Phil moved in with Mel. Mel suggested that he and Phil try out for tactical police unit to overcome their marital frustrations. Estelle discovered the $20.000 Maggie left her so she could give up her career as a hooker. Billy Clyde planned to get the money away from Estelle. Jealous of the attention Jeff is paying Tara, Christina wanted to move out of the Martin home and insisted he buy a twice-as-expensive house. Upset to hear Tom say the Church would frown on his marrying a twice-divorced woman, Erica met with Father Tierney. When Paul invited her to a 20-year high school reunion, Ellen realized how much older she is than Mark and nixes the plan to spend the weekend with him. Released from the hospital, Eddie was furious because Kelly gave Linc back the $150 he laid out for her salary. Claudette attended a Chicago convention. Dan filled in as a bartender at the Goal Post while bartender Bruno was in Italy.

July 1978

Tom asked Erica to marry him. Linc had a dream that Kitty is pleading with him to take care of Kelly. After Phil informed Donna that Chuck and Tara still love each other, though they won’t admit it, Donna vowed to fight for her husband. On his way to Estelle’s, Benny was involved in a motorcycle accident. Christina continued to resent living with the Martins. Joe and Ruth became Tad’s legal parents. Phoebe insisted on meeting Kelly. Having slept with Wally in St. Louis, Devon wanted to bring their relationship to an end once she returned to Pine Valley, but he offered her a ring. Paul considered staying away from Ellen because of Mark’s resentment. Unaware of Benny’s accident, Estelle, thinking she’s been stood up, decided to marry Billy Clyde!

Estelle ended up marrying Billy Clyde. Feeling betrayed by Phoebe because she didn’t tell Estelle he was in the hospital, Benny looks for another job. Needing an annulment so she can marry Tom in the Church, Erica asks Jeff to state he was psychologically unfit at the time of their marriage--he refused. Wally decided to follow Devon to Pine Valley and got a job there. Charles discovered Phoebe can walk. Wanting to become manager of the Chateau, Eddie told Claudette he will help her with book work she has to do to keep her position – he did the work but didn’t mail it. Phoebe met Kelly and planned to stop any relationship Linc hopes to have with her by getting information on Kelly’s past life from Edna. Meanwhile, Edna planned to go to a charm school in order to become a more socially acceptable person.

Chuck and Phil’s friendship dissolved after both insisted on appearing in court with Charlie. Phil was ejected from the courtroom; Charlie was put on probation. Charles let Phoebe know he’s aware she can walk. Ruth is suffering periodic dizzy spells. Kate was displeased with Christina's decision to retain her maiden name as a physician. Myrtle and Kelly clashed because Kelly said she liked Phoebe. Returning to Pine Valley with Wally, Devon made it clear she’d rather be friends than lovers. Joe advised Erica she can get annulment from Jeff on grounds that --she-- was psychologically unfit to be a wife. Learning Nick will be visiting Pine Valley in September, Erica decided she will be Mrs. Tom Cudahy by then. Mark and Erica are upset by Ellen’s refusal to be in Erica’s wedding party.

Just as she’s telling a shocked Tom about Erica’s difficulty getting an annulment from Jeff, Brooke choked on a piece of carrot; Tom saved her life, then confronted a livid Erica with the lie. Christina continued being anxious for her and Jeff to buy a home of their own so they can get out from under Jeff's smothering family. Aware that Paul has withdrawn from friendship with her because of Mark’s jealousy, Ellen made Paul promise to renew their relationship even though Mark and Ellen got engaged. Estelle gave Billy Clyde the $20,000 Maggie bequeathed her so he could start a limousine service between Pine Valley and Center City. Benny agreed to go back to work as Phoebe's chauffeur on a temporary basis. Phil and Tara's attempts at reconciliation were futile.

August 1978

Dan is amazed at the sober turn taken by Devon’s personality. Wally got a job as the Goal Post Valet. Devon feared added pounds meant she was pregnant. Tara nixed Phil’s offer to give up commando training if it will reconcile them. Finally getting together, Benny and Estelle reaffirm their love and she promises to ask Billy Clyde for a divorce. Caroline and Frank continued to fight over his concern for Nancy’s welfare.

Following a visit to Ann in the sanitarium, Paul realizes she will never recover mental balance. Paul was concerned over Ellen's decision to marry Mark. After discussing pregnancy symptoms with Tara, Devon feared she was pregnant by Wally. Phoebe intended to use Charlie to get Charles back and make sure Tara and Chuck are reunited. After Estelle asked Billy Clyde for a divorce, he pleaded for her to stay with him because he truly loves her. Letty Jean Jones, a former hooker, returned to her old life saying she'll never be happy in the straight world.

After learning she is pregnant, and hearing all the options, Devon considers another option: Suicide! After being granted an annulment, Erica decides she doesn't want to be married in the Church after all; she wants a Country Club wedding; but Tom prefers a quiet ceremony. Phoebe says she will come to Erica's wedding only if a invitation is sent to Charles so he will have to escort her. Charlie continues to badger Tara about remarrying Chuck. When Donna sprains her ankle, Chuck goes up to see Tara and Charlie at Willow Lake. After Chuck saves Charlie from drowning, he and Tara make love. Myrtle realizes Kelly is growing fond of Linc, however, she is upset by the thought that Linc may feel he's better than she is. Eddie is trying to cheat Kelly out of an income tax refund, yet asks Kelly to marry him to head off her feelings for Linc. Jeff and Christina prepare to move into larger house.

Just as a pregnant Devon was about to commit suicide by jumping from a bridge, Dan drove by. She tells him her purse was stolen and that she was just looking in the river. Although Tara feels guilty, she admits to Chuck she loves him. Kelly refused Eddie's marriage proposal claiming she wanted to be independent. Estelle was upset to learn she cannot move away from Locust Street because she has no money to leave. Billy has spent her bequest from Maggie to buy a limousine service. Nancy gave birth to a baby boy. When the actual annulment papers did not arrive on schedule, Erica feared her wedding may be postponed!
